| Summit’s U.S Historical Journey |
|
Our journey began a few hours south of Summit Camp, Honesdale, PA. We arrived in sunny Philadelphia to explore The Franklin Institute. Each and every exhibit challenged our thinking and shaped our perspective of diversity. In as little as 3 days, we knew our journey was going to focus on more than just Colonial History, but also shape our individual identifies. We departed Philadelphia truly valuing the freedoms our country offers us. We also left with fun facts to share with our family and friends – who would have known the Liberty Bell cracked because the types of metals used were not strong enough?! Our next stops included Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Mount Vernon. Our travelers were filled with knowledge as they began to recognize that the power of our country lies within them! Upon seeing the Declaration of Independence, our group had a new-found appreciation for what this document stands for. Continuing with their eagerness to explore other worlds, we were in awe when we discovered various life forms at the Baltimore Aquarium. It didn’t take long for us to appreciate the truest form of southern hospitality. Not only were we constantly showered with kindness and praise for great manners, but we flourished in maturity by reciprocating with style and grace. These manners followed our travelers back north to Gettysburg, PA where we learned about various battles that helped shape American History. Our campers began to realize how a series of independent events have changed the face of America. Saving the best for last, Summit Travelers headed to the Big Apple: New York City where we visited Ellis and Liberty Islands. We were amazed to witness firsthand the hopes and dreams of those coming through the doors of Ellis Island. We learned that we could not fully understand our country’s history without understanding the influence our ancestors had on our families and their dreams for a better life. We finished our travels with a permanent memory of the opportunities that now lay before us, thanks to our ancestors and forefathers. Throughout our journey of Colonial America, our travelers realized that history is not learned over night, but through a hands-on experience that is just the beginning of an ongoing learning process. This is a philosophy held by Summit Camp and Travel. We, as Americans, must continually question and challenge our world in order to better ourselves. These experiences brought smiles, laughs, inquiry, friendships and shared moments that will last a lifetime. The true characteristics of these individuals came to light and they overcame their differences to unite as one…and that is what Summit Camp is all about.
