Weekenders Foster Fun, Friendships & Belonging

Our Weekender Programs got off to a great start. Our first group had a wonderful time over the October 15-17, 2010 weekend. Twenty campers and our staff gathered for games, socializing, and an opportunity to become part of our group. Designed to foster social skill and independence, our participants are guided by Summit's staff as they participate in sports, drama activities, challenge activities, arts and crafts, and even a home grown talent show! All components are included to enable weekenders to find greater social success.

At the end of our first Weekender our campers were very positive about the event – we conduct an evaluation meeting where each Weekender has a chance to speak and share their impressions. We even heard from one of our parents who clearly named the reasons we provide these programs:

"Dear Gene,

Phil and I are so grateful for all of your help with our son. He had the best time this weekend and told us about all of his fabulous experiences - the alpaca, the ropes course, your driving experience, the movie, and more. He only wished the program could have been longer.

Zack is often excluded from parties and teased at school, but at Summit, he is accepted for who he is. He told us that I should sign him up for every weekender for the year. So, please enroll him for the upcoming programs... Again, the wrap around program you are offering these kids brings tears to my eyes. To hear Zack talk about his experiences and show us emails and phone numbers of friends that he met - well, Gene - you just can't put a price on that. Thank you for seeing the best in our son and creating this extended family for all of these kids.

All my best - Jill P."

Summit Camp provides a summer sleep away camp experience for boys and girls, ages 8-19, who have issues of attention. These may include Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD and/or ADHD), Asperger’s syndrome, awkward social skills, verbal or non-verbal learning disabilities (NVLD), and/or mild social or emotional concerns. Some of our campers may also have Tourette’s syndrome, O.C.D., and /or mild mood issues. Summit Travel works with older children, ages 15-19, who have similar issues. The Weekender program offers school year weekends designed to foster peer relationships and enhance social skills. We also are pleased to note that Weekenders will now be North – metropolitan NYC to Philadelphia – and South – Baltimore to northern Virginia.
